Following Alcatel Lucent’s announcement on June 24th that it had signed a global frame agreement for delivering technologies for optimizing the Internet experience in Telenor’s mobile networks across 11 countries, Opera has announced that its Skyfire subsidiary has been named as the lead supplier for network-based mobile video and media optimization in the Alcatel Lucent agreement.
Since signing a global framework agreement for client-based optimization in 2010, Opera Software and Telenor have implemented several innovative technologies together. This includes the Opera Mini co-branded browser, operator choice of links and Speed Dials, zero-rating of selected sites in the browser as well as the Web Pass solution for easy purchase of data packages.
The contract is initially a three-year agreement, with opportunity for extension for Opera and Skyfire as more Telenor operating companies choose to install Skyfire’s cloud media adaptation engine, Rocket Optimizer, in their own data centers. Rocket Optimizer will compress and optimize Telenor’s mobile video and data traffic on 2G, 3G and 4G LTE networks. The solution offers the ability to provide surgical, targeted relief to individual users facing a poor quality of experience. Implementation will begin in selected Southeast Asian countries.
“We’re honored that Telenor has selected Skyfire Rocket Optimizer as its solution for video and data optimization across the Telenor operating companies. Telenor has always been a forward-looking leader, and they have recognized the value of a flexible, virtualization-ready, software-defined networking solution,” commented Jeff Glueck, Opera’s EVP of Operator Solutions and CEO of Skyfire.
“Signing this deal with Telenor marks a major milestone since acquiring Skyfire,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO Opera Software. “In less than a half a year after Skyfire joined the Opera family, an agreement with a major operator such as Telenor is testament to the product portfolio and the versatility of the Skyfire technology.”
