Oslo, Norway – 15 October 2024 – Browser company Opera (NASDAQ: OPRA) is updating its iOS browser with AI-based Image Understanding capabilities. The addition follows a major overhaul of Opera’s flagship browser for iPhone – now dubbed Opera One for iOS – which has resulted in a 66% uplift of new users across Europe.

Image Understanding is an AI tool that uses photos or images as the input to help users learn more about the surrounding environment, solve problems, write code, and more. To use Image Understanding, users can upload one or more photos or take a few with Aria – Opera’s free browser AI – and inquire about the image(s). On a trip to Norway, visitors to Oslo’s waterfront could upload a photo of the city’s famous Opera House, for example, and ask Aria to explain its architectural and historical significance.

“We can see that people are increasingly choosing Opera One,” said Jona Bolin, Product Manager at Opera. “Our mission at Opera is to craft a better browsing experience compared to what you see on iOS, and Image Understanding is the next step in delivering on that promise to our users.”

Surge in new users to Opera One for iOS

Opera One for iOS has driven strong growth across Europe since its release, with new users increasing by over 66% from August to September.

The AI-centric Opera One for iOS combines the aesthetics of the award-winning Opera One desktop browser with simplified user commands and a full screen mobile interface. Users need only swipe down to access the search function, or swipe up to open the revamped newsfeed. A new navigation style, Bottom Search, shifts the search bar to the bottom of the screen to make it easier for users to manipulate their devices with one hand.

Alongside intuitive, gesture-driven commands, Opera One for iOS is designed to maximize screen space and minimize distractions. For example, the top bar and new Bottom Search bar vanish when users start scrolling on a page, and additionally the status bar and navigation bars adjust to the color of the web page visited.

Like all of Opera’s flagship browsers for desktop and mobile, Opera One for iOS offers an AI-powered browsing experience with Aria – the company’s free, built-in browser AI. With access to results from the web, plus the ability to assist in a range of tasks such as summarizing websites, generating text or code, and answering product inquiries, Aria can assist users with myriad tasks. Aria is furthermore regularly updated to incorporate new capabilities like Image Understanding, with recent additions including Voice Input – so that iOS users can speak queries aloud rather than have to type them out – and Image Generation, now with Google’s Imagen3 Fast image generation model.
