Opera Waves the Red Flag in China

RedFlag introduces Norwegian Opera in China

Beijing, China – July 1, 2002

Redflag Software Technologies Co., Ltd and Opera Software today announced a strategic announcement, and are looking forward to working together on embedded browser solutions for the Chinese market.

RedFlag will seek to join as an Opera reseller, with joint development and market efforts to tailor Opera for the Chinese embedded market.

With Opera included, RedFlag will be able to offer original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and hardware manufacturers Web-enabled solutions customized to fit with Red Flag’s current product line.

  • RedFlag’s PDA solution will be able to provide the best Internet experience available, with Opera it’s enjoyable viewing even complex Web pages on small screens.
  • Licensees of RedFlag’s Broadband set-top box (STB) will benefit from special navigation features and plug-in support, together with Opera’s cooperation with the biggest names in the industry.
  • Opera strains little on system resources, and is extremely small in size, benefitting RedFlag’s Thin Client licensees.

RedFlag is Opera’s first big Asian embedded agreement. Until now, OEMs and software solution providers (SSPs) in Asia have been unable to use Opera in their products, as support for non-Roman alphabets (Unicode)had not been implemented.

“Signing with a distinguished partner like RedFlag is a wonderful start for Opera in Asia,” says Lars Boilesen, vp embedded products, Opera Software ASA. “We are very happy to finally being able to also serve Asian companies, with Opera soon becoming a household name in Asia like it is in the rest of the world.”

In China, the government has moved to install the open-source Linux operating system provided by Red Flag in an attempt to avoid reliance on U.S. companies, particularly Microsoft. The successful RedFlag formula will now be replicated in the embedded market.

“After dominating the Chinese desktop market, RedFlag is now poised to move into the embeddded market,” says Danny Huang, geveral manager embedded products, Redflag Software Technologies Co., Ltd. “With Opera on board as a partner, RedFlag now offers the very best in embedded systems solutions for the Chinese market.”
