More than 30 million Indonesians use the Opera Mini mobile browser when accessing information online, according to Opera Software’s State of the Mobile Web report released today.
“More and more Indonesians connect to the web on their mobile phones, and we believe Opera Mini is the fastest and friendliest mobile browser in the market”, says Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software. “We are proud to have over 30 million monthly active users of Opera Mini in the country. That’s more than three times the population of Jakarta.”
Young, tech savvy and heavy users of the internet
The average age of Opera Mini users in Indonesia is 24 years old. 4 out of 10 users are still at school or university. 81% told Opera they access the internet on their phones several times a day. When online, they search the web, connect on social media or read the news.
Opera Mini users are also interested in new technologies. 90% said speed is one of the top features they look for in a browser.
Android on the rise
Android is the fastest growing platform for Opera Mini in Indonesia. The number of Opera Mini users on Android phones grew by 156% between July 2013 and July 2014. During the same period, Opera Mini iOS users grew by 71%, followed by BlackBerry with 54%.
“More than one quarter of our users are now on Android. They increased 2.5 times in one year, in line with the growth of the Android market in Indonesia”, says Boilesen.
Overall, smartphone penetration among Opera Mini users jumped from 10% to 26%, confirming that consumers increasingly discard feature phones for smartphones.
