Including Opera for Linux browser technology on the Internet enabled, cordless Screen Phone
Hannover, Germany – Feb. 25, 2000
Ericsson Mobile Communications and Opera Software ASA today signed an agreement for the use of the Opera for Linux Internet technology to enable World Wide Web Browsing on the Ericsson Cordless Screen Phone HS210. The Ericsson Screen Phone is a complete communication center, a combination of cordless telephony, and Internet access – a phone answering machine, address book and a message center all in one.
Opera Software took the step to embrace the emerging market of Internet devices in 1998, by starting to develop the Opera browser for four new platforms: EPOC, Linux BeOS and Apple Macintosh. Now two years later, Opera Software is seeing the result of this work.
“At Opera we’re dedicated to making the Internet more accessible by providing small, fast, and efficient browser software. With the Screen Phone, datacom and telecom technologies are merged giving more freedom to the consumer. The Screen Phone with its cordless Bluetooth solution in combination with Opera for Linux technology is a significant tool for interactivity,” stated Jon von Tetzchner, Opera Software CEO and co-founder.
The Screen Phone consists of a small base station and a compact cordless color screen. All you do is connect the base station and touch the screen. On-line access is rapid, e-mail notification instantaneous and with the Opera for Linux browser surfing the web a breeze. With the Screen Phone the user is no longer tied to a computer. The Ericsson Screen Phone is one of the first consumer products to be launched using patented Bluetooth technology, which does away with cables. The Ericsson Screen Phone with Opera for Linux technology gives you the freedom to surf the Internet while sitting at the kitchen table, relaxing on the sofa or lying on the bed.
“The Screen Phone is a new and exciting product that Ericsson expects to be a great success in the market. The Internet is a key element in the product, and Ericsson is happy to announce that we have decided that the Opera browser will be the default browser on the Cordless Screen Phone HS210,” said Bjorn Krylander, Vice President and General Manager in Ericsson Mobile Communications AB. “We had to have a compact and speedy browser and after an intensive search we determined Opera was our choice.”
