Opera for EPOC Beta Released Today

Opera Software focuses on Internet devices

Hannover, Germany (CeBIT) – Feb. 28, 2000

Today Opera released the new Opera for EPOC version of its popular browser Opera, known for its speed, small memory footprint and functionality. The Opera for EPOC browser can be used on devices such as the Psion Series 5 classic and Geofox machines as well as the Series 7. EPOC is also used on devices such as smart phones, screen phones and communicators. The Opera for EPOC port is yet another example of Opera’s focus on the Internet device market.

“The new strategy at Opera of focusing on Internet devices is proving quite effective. Opera Software has to-date signed agreements with Be, Screen Media, and Ericsson to deliver the Opera browser to their Internet Devices and I expect great things from our EPOC port as well. I want to see Opera as the browser of choice for the Internet device market, regardless of which operating system is running. The Opera for EPOC port is a key step in this process and to that end I’m doubling the EPOC staff” stated Jon von Tetzchner, cofounder and CEO of Opera Software.

“Opera for EPOC is fast and effective at rendering graphics and laying out text. We accomplish this by using our own solutions rather than relying on libraries. This means that Opera will still be effective on devices that can’t carry all the libraries because of size limitations. Opera is well suited to run on the smaller devices because of items like this” stated Keith Hollis lead programmer Opera for EPOC.
