Opera browser introduces Lucid Mode, a new feature that improves video quality and revitalizes holiday classics

The Opera browser's new Lucid mode sharpens videos to revitalize the classics.

Oslo, Norway — Dec. 13, 2022 — Gone are the days of blurry videos, so pixelated that one can hardly tell what’s happening. Opera, the company behind the ever-evolving, eponymous web browser, is primed to help millions of users relive some of their most cherished memories in high-definition with the new Lucid Mode that makes videos as clear as the starry winter sky.

The update is the first of many planned to come out in 2023 as the company reinvents its desktop browser in the new year. Already an industry leader, Opera’s flagship browser got numerous updates and features to improve users’ experience. It recently became the only platform on the market to have built-in TikTok support, adding to a long list of sidebar integrations that include Instagram, WhatsApp, and Twitter. In addition, the browser stands alone in offering both free VPN and VPN Pro services, backing up a commitment to security and privacy that has always been central to the company’s ethos.

The winter holidays are upon us, a time when families reunite and embrace traditions and memories. Everyone gathers together, gets cozy, and so often dives back into the moments of yesteryear including old videos – which, unfortunately, have been captured on the technology of yesteryear. Cherished moments that appear blurry on the screen – shot, as they were, for screens that don’t exist anymore – might feel correspondingly garbled in the mind, instead of sharply in focus, full of feeling and sentiment.

Opera – the first browser to effectively integrate a video and image enhancement feature – is committed to the happiness and satisfaction of its users, and studies have shown that the majority of users will stop watching a low-quality video after a couple of minutes. With Lucid Mode, the company plans to ease the stress of the holidays – and beyond – so that users can appreciate moments from the not-so-distant (but technologically ancient) past, without any of the embarrassment or frustration that poor quality resolution might bring.

“We are excited to introduce Lucid Mode, a feature that will provide our users with a better video viewing experience,” said Joanna Czajka, Product Director at Opera. “At Opera we think of the browser as a ‘super app,’ and we have so many ideas to enhance what it means to be online. With Lucid Mode, we’re giving our users another tool that will help them get the most out of what they love.”

Using Lucid Mode

All new and existing Opera users will have access to Lucid Mode starting December 13th. When users open a video, for example, on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, the floating button will appear on the video. Once turned on, Lucid Mode will add sharpness and clarity so that content can be enjoyed as it was meant to be – in comfort and relaxation, without the hassle or stress of poor quality impeding the experience. The feature will be on for all the videos on the mentioned above platforms once activated.

Just in time for the holidays, Lucid Mode is just the first in a slew of planned upgrades that will redefine the Opera browser in the coming year. Stay tuned – and in better quality than ever!

The Opera browser is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
