The Legendary Opera Web Browser Launches New Version

Opera Software continues its success

Opera Software today unveiled Opera 5.11 for Windows, as a follow-up to its successful Opera 5. The Opera 5.11 web browser will also be available for free to the millions of surfers around the world that are longing for a faster, better Internet experience. Opera has long been known has “the third browser” on Windows, and Opera 5.11 will emphasize this position in the browser market.

Since the successful launch of Opera’s free version in December 2000, the browser has received unprecedented praise from users and critics around the world. The previous Opera 5 dramatically increased Opera’s user base, with more than 2 million users and about 20,000 registering every day.

“Opera 5.11 emphasizes the innovation and support for today’s emerging web surfing community,” says Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. “This new version encompasses new features and functions that will make browsing more enjoyable for Internet savvy users,” he ends.

As with Opera 5, this new version will also be an ad sponsor-supported version offering users a $39 value in return for having one single banner ad in the browser UI. Opera will be distributed on millions of CD’s accompanying computer magazines around the world, as well as by other software makers and some of the Internet’s major Web sites.

Standards Compliant

Opera continues its commitment to the standards as laid out by the W3C. Opera 5.11 for Windows supports the following technologies: XHTML Namespace; the deprecated S element; CSS system colors and better color handling; better and more configurable email/news message interface; and a change in NOSCRIPT to be compliant with HTML.

Opera 5.11 for Windows improves the following technologies: JavaScript support for JavaScript objects and form controls; ECMAScript regexp object; support for HTML event handlers; news and e-mail handling; and the SSL handling of certificates. Opera maintains the standards from its previous version: FTP, 128-bit encryption, SSL 2 and 3, TLS 1.0, CSS1 and CSS2, XML, HTML 4.01, HTTP 1.1, ECMAScript version 3, and JavaScript 1.4.

Availability

Beginning today, Opera 5.11 for Windows is available for download. Opera Software plans to localize the new 5.11 release into other languages later this year.
