Opera and Trolltech Enter Strategic Partnership: New ZTE Smartphone Built on Qtopia/Linux Platform with Opera Web Browser

Oslo, Norway – July 5, 2005

Trolltech, global provider of leading technologies for Linux and cross-platform software development, and Opera Software, world leading developer of Web browsing technologies, today announced that they have signed a strategic partnership agreement to combine their strengths and pursue joint business opportunities.

With a complementary set of products and a shared vision for the mobile communications and home entertainment markets, Opera and Trolltech are well positioned to explore mutually beneficial opportunities. The two companies will work to further integrate Trolltech’s Qtopia© application environment for embedded Linux and Opera’s Web browser, in addition to engaging in joint marketing activities and sales training.

“Partnering with Trolltech simply makes sense. We have a full-featured and cross-platform mobile Web browser, and Trolltech’s Qtopia software provides a complete and customizable development platform and user interface for Linux-based home media and mobile devices,” said Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. “Together, we can leverage our combined strengths and present a more complete product offering to the market.”

The close cooperation between the two key technology providers serves to strengthen the position of Linux in the market for mobile and home electronics.

“This alliance mutually reinforces our global presence,” says Eirik Chambe-Eng, co-founder and president of Trolltech. “Opera’s Web browser is a natural partner for Qtopia and the two technologies complement each other in a way that will benefit consumers as well as device manufacturers.”

The first result of Opera and Trolltech’s collaboration can be seen in a new smartphone by ZTE, China’s leading telecommunications manufacturer and wireless solutions provider. The new ZTE e3 mobile phone is an advanced Linux-based smartphone that is built on the Qtopia/Linux platform and includes the Opera Web browser. The Chinese Technology Development Plan (863) lists the ZTE e3 as one of the most important smartphone projects in China.
