Meet your mobile cost cutter, the browser

Oslo, Norway – October 11, 2011

A megabyte saved is a megabyte earned. Now, the Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers for Android make it easier than ever to keep control of surfing costs.

Debuting on Android phones, Opera Mini 6.5 and Opera Mobile 11.5 will now show you exactly how much data you have spent and saved using the two products and, in turn, the money and time you save. A dedicated page, easily accessible from the help menu inside the Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers, keeps count of how much data you are spending and saving in total, or for a specific timeframe like a trip abroad with roaming.

The number of megabytes saved while using the Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers can directly translate into money saved if you are roaming or on a pay-as-you-go plan for data traffic. For people on capped data plans, this is a handy feature to make sure you don’t max out reaching those slow, punishing network speeds you might encounter after using up your allowance.

A browser in the cloud

Using cloud-assisted browsing to reduce the size of webpages by up to 90%, consumers get a faster, cheaper and better web experience. With no special device needed, Opera Mini works on more than 3000 devices and is a free download from m.opera.com.

“A lot of people don’t realize how much money they can save on data traffic, people naturally want an easy way to measure how much data they use,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “Now, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile will show exactly how much data you save by using our cloud-assisted technology. Never before has it been this easy – or this sexy – to reduce your mobile data usage.”

An easy (book)mark

Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers are becoming more tightly integrated into the Android operating system. With a handy bookmark import function and shortcuts directly from the home screens, everyday use of Opera Mini and Opera Mobile is even easier.

Bookmark import will transfer existing bookmarks on the device to the Opera browsers, while the home screen shortcut makes for easier access to your most-used websites.

Other improvements, some more visible than others, include:

  • Updated Opera Turbo in Opera Mobile allows you to take advantage of data savings with Opera Turbo, when surfing on mobile networks
  • Inline video on Honeycomb for Opera Mobile is now supported
  • Several “under the hood” improvements including a fresh update to the Opera Presto rendering engine, improved network performance, HTML5 micro data and smaller JavaScript engine memory usage

Opera Mini and Opera Mobile for Android are available for free in the Android Market or from m.opera.com.
