Embracing the era of mobile data explosion

Opera presents next-generation cloud approach to mobile video and data optimization at Vietnam Telecomp 2013

With increasing usage of mobile internet and rapid adoption of smartphones, Vietnam is now stepping into an era of mobile data explosion. To deliver a better and smarter mobile web with its partners in Vietnam, Opera Software will showcase at Vietnam Telecomp 2013 its next-generation video-compression technology and a full suite of cloud solutions to drive operators’ incremental revenue from mobile data service.

Mobile data is surging in Vietnam

Web usage and mobile data traffic have swelled due to the strong uptake of smartphones and tablets in Vietnam. According to Opera’s State of Mobile Web report, the number of Opera Mini users on Android in Vietnam increased 211% from July 2012 to July 2013, demonstrating the second-highest growth rate among countries in Southeast Asia.

The number of webpages viewed by Android and iOS users in Vietnam grew by 465% and 149%, respectively, from July 2012 to July 2013. These users consume mobile content at a rate at least three times higher than non-smartphone users do. More than half of all mobile data used in Vietnam is from consuming mobile video. Smartphones, tablets and laptops with data cards continue to proliferate, and consumers now expect to stream “over-the-top” content wherever they go, whenever they want it.

To prepare for this era of mobile data explosion and enhance the quality of operators’ networks in a highly targeted way, Opera will present Rocket Optimizer, a cloud-based mobile video optimization tool, powered by Skyfire, at Vietnam Telecomp 2013. Rocket Optimizer features full-transcoding video compression technology that boosts operators’ bandwidth capacity by over 60%.
